Some disturbing news from Alan Allen

Rep. Flores, you got some splainin to do! AUSTIN - Stop The Raid On "Sportsman's" TPWD Account #9!

The Sportsmen Conservationists of Texas has been informed that Rep. Ismael "Keno" Flores of Mission is trying to raid sportsman dollars in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Account #9. Many call that account the "Sportsman's Fund" because most of the money in it comes from sportsmen via license sales, stamp sales, and other special taxes on hunters and anglers.

In most cases, providing money for almost all the state's fish, wildlife and habitat projects is a financial burden sportsmen have chosen to take on themselves. They've put it in law that federal money in the fund may only be used for approved fish or wildlife conservation projects. Sportsmen have long been proud of the support they provide.

"If Rep. Flores had asked sportsmen, they would have told him they don't want their favored fish and wildlife projects to suffer so he can throw money at the 'World Birding Center'--which happens to be in his backyard," said Alan Allen of Sportsmen Conservationists of Texas. "Texas fishermen and hunters are not going to be happy, because less money in Account #9 means less money for anti-poaching efforts, for habitat protection, and for needed management research."

Flores' pork-barrel rider on the House Appropriations Bill would take $1.5 million from Account #9, and an additional $1.5 million from the TPWD's Parks Account #64. It's clear that neither account has any "extra" money that should be spent on a "special" project.

"Rep. Flores, and the other members of the House Appropriations Committee, need to know anglers and hunters don't like his rider," added Allen. "Rep. Flores doesn't have e-mail, so send your e-mail comments to the Chairman of Appropriations, The Honorable Robert A. Junell (of San Angelo), E-mail: robert.junell@house.state.tx.us."

Comments may also be sent to members of the House Appropriations Committee your local representative, or Rep. Flores. See your phonebook "blue pages" to find who your representative is, and see below for committee members. Write any representative at Texas House of Representatives, POB 2910, Austin, TX 78768-2910.
