Monte
and his friend Roy fished Lake Ray Roberts on Saturday evening. The weather was overcast and muggy. Storms were forcast and we were wary of any lightning that might be lurking.
We launched at the
Jordan Ramp and hit one of Monte's new honey holes in Sand branch. This honey hole never has produced for Monte but it has all the classic textbook structure. The fish should be there. They weren't! But this was only the second time for Monte to fish it. The flys were biting us so we decided to take a boat ride to Richardson's Pond. When we got there we found a couple dozen boats already there so we blew past to the next cove. The only name for that one on Monte's map is Lost Lake. We found some flooded grass near deep water in the first small cut from the main lake point on the east side of the cove. No takers. We banged the bank back up to the main lake point. Thats where Rock caught the only fish of the day on a weightless yellow trick worm.
From there we took another boat ride to Monte's favorite sand bass honey hole in Johnson Cove. We found the sand bass schooling in there. They were pushing the shad against the bank. We couldn't catch them either. I was using a little red/white roadrunner and Roy was using a white Model-A crankbait. We both got bumped a couple of times but couldn't connect. After about 20 or so casts there was this huge boom of thunder. Never saw the lightning but man it sounded like it was right on top of us. We quickly decided our trip was over, headed to the ramp, loaded the boat and lived to fish another day.
