     January 17, 1998

    Headed to Fairfield to fish

with Roy (Rock) Hudman for my first official fishing trip of the year.
This picture shows Roy with one of the three Black Bass he caught.
    That rascal outfished me again!

The weather was near perfect for January. I arrived Friday evening and we spent
a couple of unproductive hours on this power plant lake. We didn't even get a bite
    on friday.

Saturday morning, though, was a different story.

We hit the lake trolling and look what I came up with. This was the only fish
I caught all day but it was the biggest. It was 21 inches long and weighed four
and a half pounds. I think Rock's scales are broken - doesn't this fish look bigger
than that? I was so proud of the fish I fiendishly waved it at several nearby
fisherman who promptly began jigging the spot of the catch (woops!).

Roy's son, Randy, also went on the fishing trip.

He received top honors for the smallest fish of the day. Congratulations Randy!
Poor guy threw everything in the boat at em but just came up empty this time.
We caught most of the Black Bass just west of the hot water outlet in a stand of
trees in about 10 to 12 feet of water. The red bloodline power bait worms were
the most productive. The water temperature was between 60 and 70 degrees,
depending on where we were on the lake.

    Around dusk we headed

for the Hot water discharge where Rock had a field day with the Hybrid
Stripers. Sometimes it seems like he is reading the fishes minds. He has
got to be cheating in some way, I just have not caught him yet. He caught
three of these great fighting brutes while Randy and I could only cast
and retrieve (in the same spot as Rock). This one weighed in at 3 1/2
pounds and was 19 inches long.
