Monte's Latest Trip

May 24, 1999 Reading bassing periodicals is beginning to pay off. Ryan and I fished the weed beds next to Wolf Island on Ray Roberts today and got lucky. We began trolling white Model-A's around the weed beds around 3:30 pm and caught sand bass like crazy. But studying how to catch black bass paid off for us today. While trolling the edge of the beds in 8 feet of water we came accross a ditch that was 11 feet deep. We turned into it and found it to be a lane that at least one 20 inch long, 6 pound bass was using to come to and from the deep water. She bit a White Model-A real hard! I assume she was retreating to the deep water post spawn. This is my personal best. However, I have not come close to beating Ryan's best of nearly 8 pounds.
We had a great time with the sand bass. They didn't want anything chrome. All they wanted was our white Model-A's. Some of them would slam the bait real hard! Around 6:30 or 7:00 pm we decided to try some top water bassing by Johnson Branch Islands. Nothing there! Our last stop was the main lake point where we found the sandies schooling. They didn't want our white Model-A's though. They didn't want rattle traps either. But as soon as we put on a red/white roadrunner, look out man they started fighting for it. We had a field day with them until dark when they up and disappeared.
