We
have continued our fishing trips through the kid's spring break
and have found the sand bass almost every time. Last Thursday March 25, my 13 year old son, Will caught these on a white Model-A trolling in Johnson Cove on Lake Ray Roberts. We lost count somewhere around 15. We were having so much fun we didn't even try for the black bass.
The next day Seth, Ryan and I headed back to Ray Bob again and found the Sandies in the same place trolling the same white Model-A's.
It was another great day on the lake. However, Seth and I went back out Tuesday March 30 and it was quite a bit tougher. Seth caught one lone stragler sand bass in the mouth of Johnson Branch. We trolled our honey hole over and over but came up empty. It was cold, the wind was howling, and the fish were not biting.
We decided to go for the black bass so we headed to the grass beds next to wolf island. Our strategy was to toss red spinner baits on top of the hydrilla while the boat drifted accross the beds. Didn't work! Then we headed to the back of Chaparral Cove to do some wimp fishing (out of the wind) and threw motor oil colored and red shad colored worms at the cedar trees but got blanked. I may have missed one. The line suddenly went heavy but I didn't do anything. Then it was gone. Lets just say it was a tree branch. See you out there.
