Monte Lake Fairfield Hybrid Stripers was able to secure a kitchen pass from the little woman and headed to Fairfield, TX on Monday to fish with long time fishin buddy Roy (Rock) Hudman.

We hit the lake at sunrise and the wind was already howling. No matter! We were in Rock's big bad Dynatrack that is aptly named DAS BOAT. This thing is massive. Its 21 feet long and the widest Monte has ever seen. It takes a pretty stiff wind to keep it off the lake.

We bass fished for a couple hours and we both missed 1 fish each. They both spit out the worms as they tail danced. Nothing of any size though. Rock then suggested we troll some DB3 deep diving crank baits to see if we could find any redfish. We didn't find redfish but we found several nice sized Hybrid Stripers. In fact, this was one of those rare trips that Monte got to shame Roy by catching most of the fish. Roy usually outfishes Monte. But not this time. Monte caught 4 Hybrids and a 17" bass while Roy caught one. (snicker) All of the Hybrids weighed from 3.5 pounds to 5 pounds. They attacked the bait REAL hard too!

Every one Monte with Lake Fairfield Hybrids of them were caught on the same hump near the retaining wall on shad colored DB3's. This hump is off the point that devides the retaining wall cove and the TU Park cove. If we could have anchored off there we suspect we could have just slayed them all day long. The wind steadily got worse as the day went on and the anchor was not holding the huge boat in place. So we trolled it again and again. Everytime we went over the hump we marked hydrilla, stumps, and fish. Refer to the picture of Roy (he's the one with the small fish) at the top of the page. This may help you locate the hump. The boat is sitting right on top of it.

If you want some good Hybrid action troll a deep diving crank bait through there or try anchoring over the hump with some shrimp or shad.

On the stranger side of things, look at the picture of the 5 pound fish Monte is holding in the top picture. Thats not a flaw in the picture. Its monofiliment line being passed through the fish. Monte gently tugged on it and it didnt budge. Rather than injure the fish we simply cut the line and threw him back. In fact we threw all of them back. They are there for someone else to catch now.
